How Compliance Works at Fred Hutch
At Fred Hutch, compliance is about building a strong ethical foundation that empowers every individual to make the right decisions, every day.
Our Compliance Office supports this mission by focusing on seven key elements that drive an effective, responsible, and resilient organization:
- Clear Standards and Practical Policies: We create easy-to-understand Standards of Conduct and compliance policies that guide ethical decision-making and everyday behavior. These written policies and procedures ensure everyone knows what is expected and how to act responsibly.
- Visible Leadership and Dedicated Support: Our Compliance Officer and Privacy Officer, Marcia Gonzales, leads a team that provides hands-on leadership, monitors activities, and promotes a culture of accountability across the organization. Our team reports to an internal Executive Compliance Committee as well as the Audit and Compliance Committee of the Board, ensuring robust oversight and support.
- Ongoing Training and Dynamic Education: We deliver regular compliance training that helps everyone stay informed and engaged with our compliance standards.
- Safe and Confidential Reporting Channels: When issues arise, you can report them confidentially, without fear of retaliation, through multiple safe reporting options, including our helpline. Effective lines of communication are crucial for maintaining transparency and trust.
- Proactive Monitoring and Risk Management: We routinely review operations, identify risks, and recommend improvements to strengthen Fred Hutch’s compliance posture.
- Fair and Consistent Enforcement: We apply clear, consistent disciplinary processes to uphold standards and promote fairness throughout the organization. Consequences are levied consistently, regardless of the employee’s stature within the organization, ensuring enforcement is fair and appropriate.
- Swift Response and Continuous Improvement: When issues occur, we act quickly to investigate, correct, and prevent recurrence, ensuring we’re always moving forward with integrity. Our helpline procedures require prompt action, with escalation when necessary, demonstrating our commitment to continuous improvement.
